Plant Fibres

My garden doesn’t just grow food for me to eat, it potentially grows plants to wear, plants to build with, plants to dye, plants to heal. I believe use of plant fibres was born out of necessity and availability; the solution contained within the problem: Got a load of inedible grass, or a problem plant? Use the leaves and stems to create vessels to hold harvests. Troubled by a too big non-fruiting tree in a too small space? Coppice regularly to produce supports for climbing crops.

My focus is on what I might usefully grow or remove in my very local environment without the need for specialist tools or difficult preparation. My favourite fibres include bindweed and lavender, and the techniques which work best for my fingers are cordage and coil baskets.

I offer workshops in the Kent area at reasonable rates on various plant fibre items:
  • Bindweed Baskets
  • Lavender Wands
  • Bramble Baskets
  • Cordage from Problem Plants
Rates start at £10/per person for a Mini Workshop, £20/hour for one to one teaching. Contact me for more information.

There are many wonderful weavers and fibre makers out there generously sharing their skills and knowledge and making the most beautiful, useful items. Do dive in and support what they do online and in 3D. Personally, I can recommend Ruby Taylor.
